Slam Poetry as a Tool for Close Reading and Student Voice

Students spend a great deal of time practicing structured writing, but little instructional time finding their own voice. Performance, or “slam,” poetry offers an alternative. Short and easily "digestible," poems provide opportunities for close, active reading and templates upon which students can create their own art. In preparing slam poetry, students consider the impact of a single word, a pause, a mark of punctuation and how those choices will let their true voices be heard.
